Pronunciation

This course is for individuals from a non English-speaking background who are interested in learning techniques to improve their English pronunciation and have intermediate to advanced English language skills. The course is delivered through interactive exercises focusing on speech, sounds, intonation and social context. Introduction to elements of pronunciation, general introduction to voiced and voiceless sounds and their impact on communication Voiceless consonants Individual sounds, combined with past tense Word stress (Rhythm), voiced consonants. Word stress (Syllable stress), The sounds of past tense joined with verbs ending in voiced consonants. Rhythm and sounds Making use of the media, sounds in isolation, consonants. /P/-/B/-/T/-/D/-/K/-/G/ (Various positions in a word), joined with other consonants (ct- E.g. Picture) Linking in connected speech Spelling + pronunciation, linking + sound mergers, sounds in isolation Patterned pronunciation leased on spelling. /S/-Z/-/O/-/J/Sh-Ch-tion-siom Sentences stress Sounds in isolation, vowels, consonants (Nasal) Position of stress in sentences, vowels, consonants m-n-ng. Breath + Voice quality : volume + chunking Australian - English voices Chunking / Word final sounds Importance of volume to enhance charity and quality of voice. Revision and final assessment. Body language, suggestions for self-study. The impact of body language on communication. Sounds in isolation wrap up, revision.
