This course intends to provide a broader perspective on the different types of literature in the world and how literary work has been shaped through cultural landscapes. Selected American, European Asian and Asian Australian literary texts will be the focus of this course. Choosing to read a range of short stories, novels, plays and poems will sharpen critical thinking skills and become a platform for students to be aware of the diverse socio-political and economic concerns addressed through literature in different time periods. The texts will be complemented with various critical theories drawing from postcolonialism, gender studies, science studies and cultural studies.
